The Mumbai terror attacks have certainly injected much anger, despair and frustation in the minds of many Indians and foreigners. Several people who were previously indifferent to terrorism have suddenly been shaken by the utter brutality of last weeks strikes. Here’s an extract from a young Indian voice in Pune that cries out in the name of hope:
“Hemant Karkare was gunned down by the Mumbai terrorists on the night of 26th November in the service of his country. The BJP now claims him as a martyr. The very people who disrespected and disparaged this upstanding IPS officer now claim him as one of theirs. The Narendra Modi regime in Gujarat went to the extent of announcing 1 crore for the family of the slain officer. Hemant Karkare’s wife has since turned it down. Can there be anything more damning against these wretched politicians? The wife of an Indian hero has turned down this king’s ransom from the very establishment that her husband served because she knows that they are playing politics and will continue to play politics of the most deplorable kind. To quote former top cop Maxwell Perreira, “Who wants their bloody crore?!”. When it was politically convenient to destroy this man. They did it. When it is politically convenient to declare him a martyr. They did it. When it was politically convenient to offer compensation to his family. They did it…
“…Indian politicians characterize everything that is wrong with politicians across the globe. They are morally and ethically bankrupt, power hungry, corrupt, badly educated for the most part and most importantly short sighted. Politicians are only concerned with today and how they are going to hang onto power. We Indians take an almost cynical pride in our politicians – we know they’re corrupt, they know they’re corrupt and with every scandal comes a sigh of resignation. We’ve believed that despite our politicians we could continue to progress, and progress we have, but at a grave cost. Our polity has been so badly battered by regionalism, a weakened center, religious extremism, quasi socialists, Chinese communists, pseudo secularists, the criminalisation of politics and endemic corruption. The theater of the insane plays out before us even as we look on. ‘Chalta hai’ we say: this is India, anything goes. The terrorists believe that too.
Stand up. Speak Out. Enough is Enough. Let’s take back this country.”
